Voluntary Simplicity

Voluntary Simplicity at Songaia

Marilyn Hanna-Myrick

Some years ago my husband and I started to explore the principals of voluntary simplicity by reading books, attending lectures, and joining a voluntary simplicity study group...

Our choice to make our home at Songaia is an outgrowth of that exploration. Life at Songaia sustains us in our attempts at simple living.
With homes of under 1500 square feet (our particular home has 850 square feet), we have less space to care for and less space to cumulate clutter. Shared tools, lawn maintenance equipment, recreational space, laundry facilities, and cooking equipment have allowed us to reduce our personal possessions.

With shared meals which we take turns preparing, bulk food buying, and onsite organic gardens, we have lowered our food cost, we eat out less often, and we eat a more healthy diet. We frequently share rides with our neighbors at Songaia, enabling us to use the car pool lanes and decrease the impact of automobile use.

Although each household at Songaia makes their own lifestyle choices, we feel little pressure to consume beyond our basic needs. We are supported in our choice of a life centered on gratitude and human connection rather than on possessions and achievement.

Author Marilyn is clearly enjoying the "voluntary simplicity" of Songaia's Maypole dance.
Our life has become much richer after moving to Songaia.
